One word....GORGEOUS. This technique never disappoints. By gently tearing the tissue paper and using a glue water mixture with a paint brush, students created these flower paintings. Add sharpie on top of it and....GORGEOUS!

This class of fifth graders was fortunate to visit The High Museum of Art last year and see the Picasso to Warhol Exhibit. We studied all the artists in the time leading up to our visit and we created art in many of those artist's styles. This year we are making soft sculptures in the style of Claes Oldenburg. Oldenburg is famous for his monumental sculptures of Pop Art placed in public places. 5th graders are familiar with his work because his sculpture Balzac is on permanent display on at The High. Last year in preparation for this project I ordered a box of panty hose in neutral colors - I didn't expect them to be so sheer! But we are working with it. Next time I'll use tights - but how cute! RIGHT???
Here are a few of the completed still life oil pastel drawings that my fifth graders have been working on.
In fifth grade we are learning about the differences between shapes and forms and what 2D and 3D means. I set up a still life in the front of the classroom and projected it onto the white board through my document camera. The students were able to choose which objects they wanted to include in their drawings. We sketched the still life then traced it with a sharpie. The last step is to color in the objects with oil pastels. This project is taking a lot longer than I anticipated! But, they look great!

Fifth Grade Gallery...
If only we had more time together! This is the crucial year for a lot of students as to whether or not they continue making art. By the end of 5th grade, students have had experience using all kinds of media. All it takes is practice and a desire to create!
