"Pablo Picasso? He paints weird stuff", said one of my students. "Yes! He does, but do you know why?" I said.
-This was the beginning of a conversation we had in one class last week as I introduced the artist we would be studying in The Mustang Museum.
Last year, The High Museum hosted a very cool show called "Picasso to Warhol". And my 4th grade students were lucky enough to go and experience the works of 14 of the world's Masters. Picasso was one of them. The crux of the show centered around artists who break the rules and Picasso fit right in! Ask your young artist why Picasso paints weird faces with the eyes and noses at strange angles. And ask them what symbols they can identify in his works of art. Take some time to research together, or read a book together about this artist. Don't just ask the question "do you like his art?" ask "what do you think of it and why." Kids need to practice how to formulate opinions based on facts and how to support their observations.
We have a very special night planned to Celebrate the Arts on Monday, April 29th 2013
Please join us for a Student Art Show hosted by ARTOME, the opening of The Mustang Museum/Picasso and performances by The Chorus and Steel Drum Band. It's all happening from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm and we hope you'll be there!
